MishaKolesoskiA Postmodern Tapestry: Misha Kolesoski’s Album ‘A Series of Irrelevant Couplets’

Our journey along the current music landscape often presents us with little depth with regards to music production. Where great composers, epic scores, and notable musicians once innovated the styles that formed some of the most sought after genres, current mainstream music often lacks the musicality and technical expertise needed to deliver a fresh and original sound. While regularly borrowing samples from earlier singers, composers, and musicians, and remaking tracks from music history’s greatest names, the adage “there is nothing new under the sun” has never been more factual.

There are however, a few rare jewels hidden among us, often busy at work behind the scenes masterminding skillfully crafted works beckoning to be heard. We introduce you to Oregon-based composer Michael Wheeler, who now goes by the moniker Misha Kolesoski, a diamond whose illumination far outshines even the most famed of the industry’s most manufactured starlets. While delivering years of stylistic prowess as a multi-instrumentalist, Misha’s compositions express a wide breadth of skill and influence, guaranteed to be highly favored by not only discriminating music lovers but artists seeking just the right sound to fuse with their undertakings.

After taking a listen to Misha Kolesoski’s album ‘A Series of Irrelevant Couplets’ it grew apparent rather quickly that he is an avid performer with a diverse scope of experience. The album encompasses a dynamic expression of musical genres that range from traditional to contemporary and conventional to experimental. The utilization of powerful classical elements and fine electronic details signal the technical ingredients needed to create remarkable layers of sound regardless of the genre. Misha reminds us that good music, whether it is pop, alternative, or hip hop requires so much more than simple beat machines and scant guitar performances to truly present an exceptional sound that will transcend time while still expressing individuality and resonating with listeners.

‘A Series of Irrelevant Couplets’ conveys a stunning display of realism and trendsetting styles that are creatively inspiring and monstrously exciting. The album emerges furiously with the track “You Can’t Set Wet Leaves on Fire”, an instrumental piece filled with intense electronic beats, quick synths, and evocative effects that are layered into a progressive dance mix that is not only hypnotic but catchy. Fans seeking more soulful sounds on the other hand, will enjoy taking a listen to “Sigmund” and “Pennance” (both featuring Élan Noelle). Both tracks deliver a dark ambiance joined with melodic vocals, and entrancing beats.

Misha also collaborates with several hip hop artists on the album as heard on the tracks “The Game” featuring California-based artist Jay Starr, “Rise Above” featuring A.D., Omni, Jayy Starr, and Mr. Pacer, and “13 Part 3” featuring Mr. Pacer and Élan Noelle. The tracks take the raw sounds of underground hip hop music and mixes in the elements of grand orchestral accompaniment and theatrical strings to deliver a legendary sound that could be likened to that of WU-Tang Clan during the late 90s. Electronic synths and the manipulation of special effects add a futuristic flavor to the tracks giving them timeless appeal.

The album stops at nothing to touch on some of the most current trends in music while adding a postmodern flair. Two incredibly unconventional tracks that listeners will discover are “A Cradle Song” and “A Dream” featuring Celeste Thomas. In a rarely seen demonstration of music synthesis, Misha conjurers up some distinct static beats and thumping bass against spoken word poetry to impart rugged ingenuity to music aficionados. This however is just a sneak peek into the vast soundscape that he has chosen to offer fans. The album, which consists of 14 tracks is an incredible journey that must be drawn in completely in order to fully appreciate the multi-faceted talent known as Misha Kolesoski.
